Red Seal Diesel Mechanic

A diesel mechanic maintains and repairs diesel engines, ensuring they run smoothly and efficiently. They diagnose issues, conduct inspections, and perform necessary repairs to keep engines operating safely.

Knowledge & Experience:

• A National Certificate (NQF Level 4 or higher) and a Red Seal trade certificate (recently certified) is a MUST HAVE
• Additional certifications in specialized areas, such as electrical systems, diesel engines, or advanced diagnostics within the marine sector

Job Related Work Experience:

• Extensive experience working in a diesel mechanical role, typically 3 to 5 years within the marine/ ship repair sector
• Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues in vessels.
• Expertise in vessel engines, transmissions, electrical systems.
• Leadership experience overseeing a team of mechanics or apprentices, demonstrating the ability to delegate tasks, provide guidance, and ensure work quality and efficiency.

Maintenance:

• Ensuring proper maintenance and repair of diesel engines and equipment.
• Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication to ensure the proper functioning of diesel engines and equipment.
• Conduct thorough inspections to identify mechanical issues and determine necessary repairs or replacements.
• Minimize the downtime of the vessel due to electrical issues.

Diagnostic Skills:

• Ensure the work is completed to the stipulated quality standards.
• Utilize diagnostic tools and techniques to identify and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in diesel engines and systems.
• Interpret diagnostic codes and technical manuals to determine appropriate repair procedures.
• Mechanical Diagnostics.

Efficiency and Productivity:

• Efficiently manage workload to minimize downtime and maximize productivity.
• Prioritize tasks and allocate resources effectively to meet deadlines and service requirements.
• Efficiently manage time and output in completing repair and maintenance tasks within designated timeframes.

Quality, Health & Safety:

• Ensure compliance with Safety, Health, and Environmental requirements.
• Verify that all work meets or exceeds the quality standards set by the company or project stakeholders.
• Attend daily toolbox meetings.
• Maintain the site aesthetics, cleanliness, housekeeping, and safety aspects at the highest level.

Adhoc Tasks:

• Perform irregular, one time and special request tasks related to the company.
• Perform activities as stand-in for colleague as required from time to time.
